Our Top Five Movie Dads
3. Ted Kramer, Dustin Hoffman, Kramer vs Kramer
Sterling performances by Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep aside – you can’t go wrong with them, really, can you? – Kramer vs Kramer is a superbly constructed movie that’s emotive without the drama being overdone. Oscar got it right in 1980.
Thrown a curveball when his wife leaves him, workaholic Ted is afforded a full-circle character arc, delving deep inside himself to correct some of his wrongs and to accept, reason with and, eventually, forgive his wife for the sake of his son. In the process he becomes brilliant at the most important job in the world: being a father.
If you’re a dad who’s relationship with your kids’ mother is a struggle, you might like to invest a couple of hours in Kramer vs Kramer.
Mommy stayed here longer than she wanted because she loves you so much. And the reason why Mommy couldn’t stay anymore… was because she couldn’t stand me. She didn’t leave because of you.
Great List! I would add Will Smith’s character in Pursuit of Happiness.
